A recap of the 2025 Annual Meeting & Learning Weekend  ~
April 4-6, 2025, Skyline Farm, N. Yarmouth, ME
www.skylinefarm.org

What participants experienced:
  •  Friday evening Wine & Hors d'oeuvres social hour at Skyline Farm along with...
  • a fun Horse Trivia game lead by its creator, Dick Lahey.  Questions about horse facts, movies, art, history and much more were answered by teams of two randomly selected members who buzzed in anxiously with their answers.  Audience participation was asked for in the event of incorrectly answered questions. Points were awarded and a champion team was crowned at the conclusion of the game.
  • Saturday morning speakers including John Frost of Remembrance Hill Carriages in Rehoboth, MA on the finer points of owning and operating a horse-drawn carriage business. Our own president, Nick Buck, gave a powerpoint presentation on the use of work wagons in Maine during their heyday in the 1800's and early 1900's with fascinating photos and facts.
  • pre-ordered lunch sandwiches, cookies and sides by Clayton's Cafe in Yarmouth both Saturday and Sunday
  • A trip to the Fryeburg Fair Grounds and Conway, NH to view the Sut Marshall carriage collection of mostly heavy, large horse-drawn vehicles.  Many were new to members who marveled at their quality and preservation.  This collection will be auctioned on June 13 & 14 at the Fryeburg Fair Grounds.  www.auctionzip.com/Listings/3954006.html
  • A delicious catered dinner at the Old Town Hall in Freeport and live auction conducted by president, Nick Buck.  Fabulous items donated by members.
  • An evening speaker:  Jesse Dowling who trained for and competed in the 1,000 kilometer Mongol Derby for 10 days!  This was truly a fascinating glimpse into the world of elite endurance riding!  A question and answer session followed the visual presentation.
  • Our short Annual Meeting where new officers were elected, by-laws were updated and passed and ideas for next year's weekend were discussed.
  • Past president, Greg Cuffey gave a brief overview of rein holders which were/are used on carriage dash boards to hold the reins in place when the driver is out of the carriage.
  • A viewing of the current (and ever changing) collection of sleighs and carriages at Skyline Farm.  This self-tour of the museum is well marked with placards on most vehicles and is open to the public.  See the Skyline Farm link above for more information.
  • An opportunity to view the New Gloucester (Maine) Historical Society's carriage collection.
  • Members enjoyed a block room hotel rate at the lovely Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, just down the street from L.L. Bean and many other shops, as well as the nearby Chrysalis Acres, a carriage tack shop.  www.chrysalisacres.com/
